Stuff My Dad Draws
We love this description of Troy Celis by his son Shane so much, we had to share it (mostly) in full…
"My dad is a little unconventional. He lives in a trailer—turned personal jungle—with his pets: pigeons, rabbits, turtles, doves, turtle doves, cats, dogs, fish, peacocks, and more depending on what animals he may have found on the side of the road. He comes up with inventive names for each of them. “Kitty-one-eye (the third) is doing well, even though she only has one eye. Humph, oh well.”
He is an ex-elephant trainer, ex-Coast Guardsman, and most proudly an ex-smoker. And up until recently he was an ex-artist.
My dad has drawn, painted, and sculpted for as long as I can remember. Six years ago he quit smoking and subsequently quit art because of its association with smoking. Six months ago he was diagnosed with emphysema.
Three months ago my dad was exposed to Paper, an iPad drawing application. Immediately, there was an explosion of his art on Facebook. I received several voicemails from my dad. “Kiddo, this Paper app is bitchin’. Excuse my language, Son. This is your dad.”
Art updates were sporadic as he had to beg, borrow, and beg some more to use his best friend’s—my mom’s—iPad. Eager for more of his artwork, my family and I decided to do the selfish thing and buy him his own iPad.
This Christmas we watched him open it over FaceTime. As he unwrapped his first non-hand-me-down computer, he squealed with glee and kissed the box! “I didn’t think I’d live long enough to ever get an iPad.” No beards were left dry that morning.”
Don’t miss Stuff My Dad Draws, a remarkable series made with Paper by Troy Celis.
